The Plan (as of October 2006)

We'd been talking about where to go for months, and it seemed to change every few weeks. First we planned to drive to Mexico, which would be lovely in the wintertime, allow us to expand our Spanglish, and to eat lots and lots of tacos. But Tom was also intrigued by exotic Goa, India. And I have been interested in the Trans-Siberian railroad, which would take us from Beijing to Moscow. We talked of various scenarios for weeks!
Putting a map on the wall didn't really help. We quickly circled about 40 countries, with material enough for a 5-year journey. We considered Fiji and the Soloman Islands for scuba diving, the pyramids of Egypt, Eastern Europe, parts of Africa and even the possibility of South America!
Figuring out the weather in these places eventually helped us out... who the heck wants to be in Mongolia in the wintertime or Egypt in the summer? We figured out an itinerary that would just allow us to escape the snowy winter here, the heat in another place. It involved lots of flights and coordination.
Then we considered 'Plan A' again. And thought, 'if we plan on driving to Mexico/Central America, we wont HAVE a set itinerary'!! And that sounded like the best plan of all!
So the plan is: Drive to California to visit my family. Then drive to Southern California to see some of Toms friends. Then drive south and do whatever the heck we feel like. WAHOO for spontaneity!
