Bryce and Beyond

We rolled up to Bryce Canyon on the 7th and it was a gorgeous day.  The sky was this crazy electric blue and it had to be 75 degrees.  We decided to take a hike off Sunset Point that would take us down into the canyon so we could check it out from below.  Travelling in November is the best because we had miles of trails almost entirely to ourselves.  We didn't see much interesting wildlife but the views of the canyon were unbelievable, and I appreciated that the hike wasn't anywhere near as hairy as Angel's Landing.  When we got back up to the top I checked my watch and saw that it was "cow-tail time" so I ate one (thanks Jay & Noel) and we took off.

After leaving Bryce, we were confronted with roads like this... very long and very straight and absolutely nothing around for miles except cows or antelope.  Nevada was an interesting state to drive across on interstate 50:  you'd spend a while weaving up through a mountain pass and then come down to a giant open plain like this one with nothing around.  Then you'd go up another pass through to another plain and so on and so on.  It was amazingly vast.  We actually drove past a couple of bikers who looked like they were packing across america - i can't imagine how long and boring Nevada must have been for them... at least we could do 75 mph!!
Ahh yes, my first tumbleweed.  What an interesting specimen it was.  I saw the thing rolling around so I pulled over to kick it around a bit.  Then I picked the thing up and SONOFA- I realized they were little frickin thorn bushes.  Sharp little buggers.  I still had thorns in my pantleg the next day.  So kids, I know they look like fun, but don't play with tumbleweeds.

This is a picture of "Sand Mountain"... a spectacle not to be missed whenever travelling across Nevada.  I don't know why but it's such a crazy suprise to everybody to see a giant pile of sand in the middle of the desert.  Go figure.  Anyway I thought it was interesting because there were these crazy whackjobs on ATVs driving up and over this thing as fast as they could go.  I could imagine my brother and Jim out there, eyes wide open, going as fast as can be with rat-sized desert grasshoppers stuck in their teeth.  Later on we happened by a Naval Air Station where we stopped to watch a group of F-18s show off a bit.  I was too busy drooling to get pictures but they are loud and fun to watch.

      Hey Kids:
This is awesome! I almost feel like I am on the trip with you, other then the fact I am at work, in a cubicle staring at my 15" monitor pretending to hear the wind and feel the sun on my face.
I hope you two have an awesome time and I will be checking in often.
Oh Tom, can I have your bike?
      Thanks!

Okay, so you missed Great Sand Dunes Nat'l Park in Colorado, but I will say that this picture of Sand Mountain looks like you could get a similar experience. Sounds like you were pretty close...did you see anyone carving it up on old snowboards?
