CAYE CAULKER - After a night in Belize City we caught an early morning water taxi to Caye Caulker. Chuck Cronin from Isla Mujeres had recommended Ignacio's Beach Cabanas so we decided to check them out. Boy was he spot on! The cabanas were meager, but they are RIGHT on the water and have all you need. Well, except hot showers

They even sell ice cold local beer... Beliken... right in the office. Did I mention Beliken makes a stout? God save the Queen it's gotta be the British influence. Check out the view from our cabana...

Here's a look at the inside of the cabana... nothing fancy but it's got a private bathroom with a toilet, a sink and a shower! 'Navy showers' only as the water is COLD.

We quickly realized that life moves pretty slow out here on Caye Caulker and it didn't take long for us to fall into line with the rest of the folks on the island. You start walking slower, forget what time it is and just enjoy resting in the hammock and looking at the ocean. This place is chill and we love it.
On Christmas we just hung around and enjoyed the day. Well, except for the hours we wasted trying to call home using Belize's grossly inadequate phone system. I think there are only two outgoing lines in the country. Oh well, we finally got through to our parents around 10:30pm eastern time so all was forgiven. Christmas is fine away from home as long as you get to check in... I'd have been very cranky if I hadn't been able to say hi to dad and Kay. Santa Claus even came... on Christmas Eve we had to dry our clothes in the room so I took advantage of the opportunity and stuffed some of the socks with m&ms and hershey bars. I didn't really know what else I could fit in them but it was plenty. Anna really enjoyed the suprise, which was awesome.
Our friend Joff that we ran into again in Chetumal was slated to arrive for Boxing day (the 26th) so we'd made plans for a Boxing Day toast. Turns out he found a cabana at Ignacio's so we've gotten to hang out quite a bit. Our first task was building a communal area where we could all sit and hang out (preferably in the shade)... so being the industrious lot that we are we made a 'lounge' under the cabana with old lumber for benches and a lobster trap for a table. We even set up a bar! We've spent countless hours here playing rummy cube and passing the time.

On one of the last couple nights I ventured across to the other side of the island to see the sun set. What a beautiful view... nothing but ocean and orange.
