Surf's Up

SANTA TERESA - When I visited my cousin Mark in Olympia last November he and his housemate Scott said they'd be going surfing in Costa Rica sometime in April. They were true to their word and we met them in Santa Teresa Costa Rica for a couple of days of sun and surf. Santa Teresa itself is a dusty, dirt-road, surfer town on the Pacific side of the Nicoya Peninsula that's full of gringos looking to catch that one great wave.

Here's a shot of the view from hotel Buenos Aires. It sits up ontop of a hill overlooking Santa Teresa - and of course the ocean - so it's easy to see how the waves are breaking. The place was only 40 bucks a night, which is expensive compared to the other places we'd been staying, but is cheap for Costa Rica... it even had a pool!

Here you can see the sunset through the giant hole in my cousin's ear. Some may ask why he has a giant hole in his ear...

This is how we surfers prep our boards before we, how do you say, 'surf the rad'...

Here we are getting ready to get 'worked'...

Anna was busy filming Scott and Mark surfing, and me nearly drowning. I did drop in on a sweet wave the first day... but on the next attempt I got 'the Maytag treatment' and thought I'd taken my last breath. Mark and Scott had a bunch of great rides... Scott had a few where got absolutely destroyed by the waves in the end... ON TAPE. Fun to watch over and over!

We also took a ride to Montezuma in the amazing-that-it-still-runs 3 cylinder Daihatsu 4x4 the guys rented. We had a fantastic lunch on the beach and then hiked up to see this waterfall. Scott thought it would be cool to dive off... and I thought it would be cool to take his picture doing it.

I'm so glad Mark made the trip to Costa Rica, we had such a blast with those guys. (Nan, that picture is right... he's not wearing all black!)
